Arete (ἀρετή)

"excellence" of any kind especially a person or thing's "full realization of potential or inherent function."

In philosophy, arete (ἀρετή) is a Greek term that broadly translates to excellence, virtue, or fulfilling one's potential. It encompasses not just moral goodness, but also the idea of achieving one's highest potential in any area, whether physical, mental, or spiritual. It's about being the best one can be, fulfilling one's purpose, and striving for perfection in all aspects of life.

That is the target that we strive for in our Jiu Jitsu, it’s not about achieving perfection but about moving in the direction of your best self. Whether that be as a Jiu Jitsu practitioner, martial artist, teammate or a friend. To have a place where you can trust that this common goal is shared and worked towards at all times, and the fullfilment and joy that comes along side that . The best philosophy is always better lived then spoken or written about. The practice of Jiu Jitsu is built on the lessons of growth and it helps familiarize yourself to them like nothing else will, you get to live them clearly and repeatedly.

Coach Jose “Animal” Arreguin

Coach Animal is a 10th Planet Brown belt With 10 years of experience training, competing, and teaching jiu jitsu. Like many people who find this martial art he stepped on the mat and knew that he had no choice but to do this forever. In 3 months he fully dedicated to training and mastering the art and hasn’t taken his eyes off that goal since. He knew the only way to make that possible was to make jiu jitsu his life and proceeded to let it seep into all aspects of it, enhancing it and giving him many lessons and tools that would prove useful for a lifetime. It is his pleasure to share as much of that as possible with all those who seek to learn and grow with jiu jitsu.
